Gardening

Wow, what a loaded word! It encompasses everything from container boxes to full fledged, in the ground, tilled gardens that have long beautiful rows. Basically, gardening starts with compost, soil, and drainage. Then there’s garden planning, seed planting, indoor seed starting or direct sow, companion planting, and setting plants up for success.

Container gardening is a wonderful way to maintain various varieties of plants.

Oh and there’s more, don’t forget deer resistant planting, herbs, and propagation. Did I mention common pests?

Whew, and I’ve just scratched the surface. We want to share everything learned from working at a nursery/greenhouse to trial and error experiences.

So, check back regularly for weekly posts where we’ll help you get off to a strong start from spring, right on through to harvest! In the future, we are planning to share about urban gardens, children’s gardens, and gardening in small spaces.

Fresh Cut Flowers

Dynamically, fresh cut flowers change the ambiance of a room, and offer encouragement to the grieving. They also brighten celebrations and occassions. For the sick, they offer something bright and happy. I haven’t even touched on the medicinal and psychological benefits of flower gardening.

Personally, I have found such joy in the whole process from seeding, to watching those first seedlings emerge, and then caring for them until it’s harvest time. I’m at a loss for words when I try to express the satisfaction of taking flowers from a garden and transforming them into a color bouquet or arrangment. Enthusiastically, I take advantage of every opportunity to bring someone a vase of flowers, whether I’m stopping in to say hello, leaving a note with flowers at the end of a housesit, or bringing them to my grandmother for her table. They came from my garden, and not just the grocery store. They are an expression of me.

Flowers can be grown for all sorts of arragements.

Likewise, they can be an expression of you, too! In the future, when you present them for whatever occassion, or just use them to adorn your own home or office, you’ll have that same satisfaction. So, check out my thoughts on fresh cut flower gardening. I have provided suggestions about how to get started, my favorite picks, as well as detals about each.
